A4988 BIPOLAR STEPPER DRIVER: Red Reprap StepStick-compatible module controls a bipolar stepper motor through STEP and DIR signals. Five selectable resolutions include full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16-step operation.

SEPARATE MOTOR AND LOGIC POWER: VMOT accepts DC 8–35 V for the motor stage, while VDD requires DC 3–5.5 V logic power and supports 3.3 V or 5 V control systems. Keep both supplies within their specified ranges.

UP TO 2 A MAXIMUM OUTPUT: The onboard potentiometer sets the current limit using the module's 0.1-ohm sense resistors. Available motor current depends on the current-limit adjustment, supply, cooling and operating conditions; 2 A is a maximum capability, not a guaranteed continuous current.

CONTROL AND PROTECTION: Provides ENABLE, RESET, SLEEP, STEP, DIR and MS1–MS3 inputs, plus 1A/1B and 2A/2B motor outputs. A4988 functions include undervoltage lockout, thermal shutdown, crossover-current, short-to-ground and shorted-load protection.

MODULE WITH SEPARATE HEATSINK: Includes one red A4988 module with soldered gold-plated headers and one user-installed aluminum heatsink. The assembled module weighs approximately 3.7 g. Confirm pin orientation, install local VMOT filtering and disconnect power before wiring the motor.

The Elecbee red A4988 module combines STEP/DIR control, five selectable step resolutions, adjustable current limiting and a removable heatsink for compatible 3D-printer, CNC and embedded motion-control systems.

MOTION CONTROL

Simple STEP and DIR Interface

A rising edge on STEP advances the motor by one selected increment, while DIR sets the rotation direction. MS1, MS2 and MS3 select full, half, quarter, eighth or sixteenth-step operation. ENABLE controls the outputs, while RESET and SLEEP manage translator reset and low-power operation.

PINOUT AND WIRING

Separate Power, Logic and Motor Connections

Connect the motor supply to VMOT and the adjacent GND, and connect the controller logic supply to VDD and logic GND. The two bipolar motor windings connect to 1A/1B and 2A/2B. STEP, DIR and MS1–MS3 connect to the motion controller.

RESET and SLEEP must be driven correctly for normal operation. Place an electrolytic bulk capacitor of at least 47 µF close to VMOT and GND, using a voltage rating appropriate for the motor supply.

DRIVER FUNCTIONS

Current Regulation and Integrated Protection

The A4988 uses fixed-off-time PWM current regulation with automatic slow or mixed current-decay selection and synchronous rectification. Integrated functions include undervoltage lockout, thermal shutdown, crossover-current protection, short-to-ground protection and shorted-load protection.

Suitable for compatible Reprap 3D printers, RAMPS and Ultimaker-style controller boards, CNC machines, engraving equipment and other systems using bipolar stepper motors. Confirm the socket pinout, supply ranges, motor phase wiring and required current before installation.

Important Installation NotesInstall the supplied heatsink before operation and provide airflow when the application requires higher current. Set the current limit before extended motor operation. Never insert the module backward, connect or disconnect the motor while powered, or apply motor voltage to the VDD logic pin.
