What is an SMA Connector?

14/09/2022 Leon

SMA connectors usually have brass or stainless steel bodies. The finish on SMA connectors is usually nickel or gold, while the stainless steel body has a passivated or gold finish. The center contact/pin of the SMA connector is usually made of brass or gold-plated copper.

The SMA (Subminiature Type A) coaxial RF connector was developed in the 1960s as A subminiature connector interface for RF cables with A helical coupling mechanism. Since then, many variants of the SMA family have evolved to meet the changing requirements of the RF and microwave industries.

The connector has a characteristic impedance of 50 ω and was originally designed for DC (0 Hz) to 12 GHz. However, this has been extended over time and variants designed to work at 18 GHz and 26.5 GHz are now available.

The standard polar SMA male connector has a center pin of 0.9 mm diameter surrounded by a barrel with internal thread, and the standard SMA female connector has a center sleeve surrounded by a barrel with external thread. The gender assignment corresponds to the innermost electronic component. The center pin is the same diameter as the center of the RG402 coaxial cable, so it can be connected without interruption. The pins are formed by the coaxial cable itself.

SMA materials

Environmental requirements dictate the choice of material for fabrication of connectors and surface plating. Use in harsh environments requires the popular standard SMA connector and custom designed version of IP68.

SMA connectors usually have brass or stainless steel bodies. The finish on SMA connectors is usually nickel or gold, while the stainless steel body has a passivated or gold finish. The center contact/pin of the SMA connector is usually made of brass or gold-plated copper.

Design specification

Installation Configurations Main installation configurations include panel installation (2-hole and 4-hole flanges), PCB installation, edge installation, partition installation, SM and through-hole installation.

Features

50 ω impedance for DC (0 Hz) to 12 GHz, with variants available at 18 GHz and 26.5 GHz.

Material

SMA connector bodies are typically brass with nickel or gold finishes or stainless steel with passivated or gold finishes. Connector center contacts/pins are usually brass or gold-plated copper.

Market, Industry, Applications

SMA connectors are used in the telecommunications, medical, industrial, factory automation, and robotics markets. Applications include microwave systems, handheld radio and mobile phone antennas, Wi-Fi antenna systems and USB software-defined radio dongles and radio astronomy, especially at higher frequencies (5 GHz+).
